Facebook recently changed the default privacy settings for new users from many items about a person being public to being restricted to friends. This is a welcome change for privacy advocates everywhere. On a complex web application like Facebook, understanding how the privacy settings work can be a difficult task for new users and Facebook veterans alike. Given the rash of privacy related faux pas in recent years from everything from over-sharing, to people irresponsibly drunk-posting, to "people reviews" websites, helping onboard new users the right way with better privacy by default is a welcome change.
